Two picket heights run on this property, both framed the same way. We set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, built out the taller section with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and the shorter section with two, then fastened cedar pickets, 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch, using galvanized ring shank nails. The walk gate carries an adjustable diagonal support brace and swings outward, away from the house, so it clears the ground and can be trued up later if the run settles. Steel posts do not rot at grade the way wood can in wet clay. Stepping heights like this suits Bixby yards that change purpose from front to back.
