Steel shows up twice in this build, and both times it does work wood cannot. The fence posts are 2 1/2 inch square steel set in concrete, holding the run plumb through the wet and dry cycles that push clay soil around. The gate frame is welded from 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, which is what keeps a swinging panel from dropping at the latch corner over time. Everything you see is cedar: 5/8 by 3.5 inch dog ear pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. The gate opens outward, away from the house. Jenks homeowners get privacy that does not sag.
