Stepping the fence down from full height to a lower cedar section changes how the yard feels without changing what it is made of, so the color and the dog ear tops carry through. The tall stretch uses 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot cedar pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails; the shorter stretch uses 4 foot pickets on two backrails, which is all a board that length needs. Both sit on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete and are nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. The walk gate was put together in our shop from matching boards. Dropping height where privacy is not needed keeps a Tulsa yard from feeling boxed in.
