Cedar pickets, 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet, weather on their own without treatment, and the three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and galvanized ring shank nails behind them stay shaded from the worst of the sun. The 2 1/2 inch square steel posts are set in concrete and never sit in contact with rotting timber. Our shop built the walk gate in matching cedar on heavy duty hinges. In older Tulsa neighborhoods where houses sit close, a fence you never work on from the other side is worth having.
