Once the line was strung, we augered holes and set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, keeping every post plumb and on line before any wood went up. Three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails came next, then 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. The walk gate was built to match and hung at the end. Cedar handles moisture and insects well on its own, and it weathers to a soft gray if you leave it alone. Pairing it with steel posts keeps the framing out of the wet zone at ground level. For a Bixby backyard, that means a straight line years later.
