The cedar handles the privacy at this height, and the gate is where we spent the extra effort. Pickets are 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 foot cedar on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, carried by three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and galvanized ring shank nails. For the opening we built a walk gate on a welded frame of 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, then clad it in matching cedar. Wood gates tend to drop at the outer corner over time, and a welded steel frame stops that before it starts. It swings outward, away from the house. Bixby homes with heavy gate traffic are where this frame earns its keep.
