A privacy run turns a back yard into an outdoor room, and the steel underneath is what keeps that room square years later. We set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, ran three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails between them, and faced the whole line with 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot cedar dog ear pickets fixed with galvanized ring shank nails. Steel posts will not rot at the ground line or twist the way wood can when Bixby clay swells and dries back out. The ring shank nails keep their grip through the same cycle. We built the walk gate from matching cedar so it reads as part of the run.
