This one is a straightforward perimeter run, and all the value sits in the build. Cedar dog ear pickets, 5/8 inch thick and 3.5 inches wide, hang on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, carried by three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. The third back rail is not decoration: it holds the middle of each picket flat so boards cannot cup or bow after a few dry weeks. Ring shank nails grip as the wood moves, and galvanizing keeps them from bleeding rust down the face. Cedar weathers to a soft gray if you leave it alone. Bixby back yards take a lot of afternoon sun, and this handles it.
