Sloped ground is where a cheap fence shows its weakness, and a run built on rigid posts follows a grade change far more cleanly. We concreted 2 1/2″ square steel fence posts, spanned them with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, and hung 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ cedar pickets using galvanized ring shank nails. Cedar resists decay and insects on its own, so nothing has to be added to keep it sound. Three backrails rather than two hold long pickets flat against gusts. The steel carries the load where the fence steps down a bank. Sand Springs sits on rolling ground, and a fence here has to deal with it.
