Wood gate frames eventually rack out of square; welded steel frames do not. Both gates on this project are built on 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, welded in our shop, one a walk gate that swings outward away from the house and one a double gate for wider access. Galvanizing keeps those frames from rusting through Claremore winters. The fence they hang in is cedar, 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot pickets, dog ear cut, on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and galvanized ring shank nails. Steel framing earns its keep at any opening you use daily.
