Framing went up in three stages here: posts, rails, pickets. The 2 1/2 inch square steel posts were set in concrete and left alone until the footings took, then three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails spanned each bay, and 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets covered the frame with galvanized ring shank nails holding them. Wind is the main load on a fence this solid, since the pickets act like a sail. Steel posts and a third backrail spread that load rather than concentrating it at one weak point. For a Tulsa backyard catching south wind most of the year, that is the difference between straight and leaning.
