Cedar pickets carried on square steel posts are an ordinary, well proven way to build a privacy fence, and the reason is simple: the material that rots is not the material holding the fence up. The 2 1/2 inch steel posts are set in concrete, and above them run three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar dog ear pickets, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. The walk gate has an adjustable diagonal support brace, so if it ever settles it can be tuned back square instead of rebuilt, and it opens outward away from the house.
