We hung it on heavy duty hinges with a secure latch, framed it around sturdy backrails, and used galvanized fasteners so nothing rusts into the cedar. The fence carries 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar dog ear pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails to 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Cedar resists rot on its own, and keeping the structural posts in steel takes the ground moisture question off the table entirely.
