Cedar resists insects and decay on its own, with nothing brushed on, and that is the main reason it lasts on a fence line. The pickets here are 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet, laid over three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and nailed with galvanized ring shank nails. The posts tell the other half of the story: 2 1/2 inch square steel, set in concrete, so the two things that usually fail first, buried timber and bare steel fasteners, are both out of the picture. We built the walk gate in matching cedar. On a Broken Arrow lot, that is about as little upkeep as a solid wood fence can ask for.
