Square steel posts answer the failure that ends most wood fences. Timber in contact with wet clay soil eventually softens at the ground line, so we set 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete and hung the wood on them instead. Above grade the fence is all cedar: 5/8 by 3.5 inch dog ear pickets over three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. Cedar resists insects and decay on its own merits, and it stays put through wet springs and dry Augusts. The walk gate carries an adjustable diagonal brace so it can be trued up later, and it opens away from the house. Broken Arrow yards get long service from this build.
