Gates are the moving part, so this one carries an adjustable diagonal support brace across the frame. If it ever begins to drop toward the latch side, the brace takes it back up without pulling the gate apart, and it swings outward away from the house so the yard side stays clear. The fence itself is 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails, with 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete and galvanized ring shank nails throughout. Steel at the hinge post gives that brace something solid to pull against. In older Tulsa neighborhoods with narrow side yards, a gate that always clears is worth the detail.
