The gate is the only part of a fence with moving parts, and it absorbs the most abuse. This one is built on a welded frame of 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, so it stays square instead of drooping at the latch, and it swings outward away from the house. The fence around it is cedar: 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot pickets, dog ear cut, on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete with three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and galvanized ring shank nails. Galvanizing on the tubing and the nails alike handles Tulsa humidity. Years of daily use will not change the way it closes.
