Wind catches a gate leaf harder than it catches the fence, simply because a gate can move. The walk gate here is framed in 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, welded square so nothing racks out of shape, and it swings outward away from the house to keep the arc clear of the wall. The fence it hangs from uses 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar pickets on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. On a Broken Arrow lot where one gate does all the work, that steel frame earns its keep every day.
