Fencing the back yard is what finally makes it a place you use, not just ground behind the house. This run is cedar throughout, 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch by 6 foot dog ear pickets nailed with galvanized ring shank nails to three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, all hanging on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. The steel does the structural work, so the cedar can weather on its own schedule without the posts going with it. At the entry we welded a walk gate frame from 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, hung to open outward away from the house. Bixby soil moves, and concrete footings under steel keep the line honest.
