The gate is the part of any fence you touch every day, so it got the steel treatment here. We framed the walk gate from 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing and hung it to swing outward away from the house, then built the line beside it in cedar dog ear pickets on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete, over three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails. Wood gate frames rack over time. A welded steel frame does not, so the latch keeps meeting the catch through wet springs and dry Augusts alike. Galvanizing settles the rust question. Bixby homeowners who use a side gate constantly notice that difference first.
