Cedar face, steel bones. The visible side is 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets with dog ear tops, and behind them sit three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. The walk gate follows the same thinking: a welded frame of 1 1/2 inch galvanized square steel tubing, clad in cedar, so the gate holds its square and the latch keeps finding the same spot season after season. It opens outward, away from the house, which keeps the swing clear of a patio or walkway. Galvanized ring shank nails hold every picket. Bixby yards with tight side runs get real use out of a gate that never drags.
