Keeping a yard private and keeping the fence standing are two different problems, and this build answers each with a different material. The privacy comes from 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 6′ cedar pickets butted together with a dog ear top and fastened with galvanized ring shank nails. The strength comes from 2 1/2″ square steel fence posts set in concrete, tied together by three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails that carry the pickets. Wood above ground, steel below it, is a common build across the metro because it lasts. Cedar also handles wet spells without soaking up damage. For a Tulsa back yard, that makes a straightforward and durable screen.
