Three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails behind the pickets are what keep a tall wood fence from waving down the line. Fir is stiff and holds a nail, so the rails stay true as the fence takes wind season after season. To them we nailed 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar dog ear pickets with galvanized ring shank nails, and the whole run stands on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. Cedar handles the weather on the surface, steel handles the ground. The walk gate uses matching pickets and its own back rails, with a secure latch. Broken Arrow subdivisions with close lot lines benefit from that kind of stiffness.
