A privacy fence is mostly picket, so the picket deserves the attention. Ours are 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar with a dog ear top, thick enough to stay flat and naturally resistant to the damp and the insects that come with a wooded yard. Three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails hold them in line, galvanized ring shank nails keep them from working loose, and 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete carry the whole run. The walk gate uses the same cedar with its own back rails, heavy duty hinges, and a latch that closes without forcing. Nothing here needs painting to keep doing its job in Tulsa.
