Cedar carries its own resistance to rot and insects, which is why it holds up on a fence line with nothing applied to it. These pickets measure 5/8 by 3.5 by 6 feet and sit on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, nailed with galvanized ring shank nails that will not stain the face as they age. The posts are 2 1/2 inch square steel in concrete, so freeze and thaw cycles have no rotting butt to lift out of line. Access comes through an 8 foot double gate we built in matching wood, hung on 8 inch strap hinges with a drop rod assembly. Broken Arrow yards that store a trailer or a boat need that width.
