Bare cedar has a grain and a color that no finish improves on, which is why this run went up unstained and dog ear topped. The stock is 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar on three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails, fixed with galvanized ring shank nails and carried by 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete. The walk gate has an adjustable diagonal support brace, so if it ever starts to drop on the latch side you can pull the sag back out with a turn instead of rebuilding the gate. It swings outward, away from the house, keeping the path clear. That is a practical piece of hardware on a Bixby lot with a narrow side yard.
