Posts do the thinking on a fence like this. Each 2 1/2 inch square steel post goes into a concrete footing, and steel brings no swelling, no checking, and no soft spot at ground level a decade on. Above them, three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails span between posts and carry 5/8 by 3.5 inch cedar pickets, nailed off with galvanized ring shank nails. Cedar is the picket of choice here because it stands up to weather without chemical treatment and looks better doing it. Our walk gate uses the same boards, with heavy duty hinges, a secure latch, and back rails keeping it square. Claremore properties catch open wind, and this run is set up for it.
