We dug, plumbed, and concreted 4×4 treated posts before touching a picket, because everything after that depends on the posts being right. Three Douglas fir 2×4 backrails span the posts, and 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets go on with galvanized ring shank nails that keep their grip as the boards cycle through wet and dry weather. The walk gate came last and was fitted to the opening rather than to the plan. Cedar tops treated posts nicely here, with the treatment handling ground contact and the cedar handling sun and rain.
