Going taller changes the engineering, not just the look. This run carries four Douglas fir 2×4 back rails instead of three, because the taller the panel the more surface the wind pushes on, and it stands on 2 1/2″ square steel posts set in concrete. The pickets are 5/8″ x 3.5″ x 8′ cedar, topped with a 2×6 cedar cap board and finished with 1×4 cedar trim, all fastened with galvanized ring shank nails.
