Cap and trim work is finish carpentry on a fence. After setting 2 1/2 inch square steel posts in concrete, we framed the tall run with four Douglas fir 2×4 back rails and the shorter run with three, then nailed 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar pickets on with galvanized ring shank nails. A 2×6 cedar cap board tops each run and 1×4 cedar trim covers the joint below it, locking the picket tops together and keeping water off the end grain. The wood walk gate matches. Added height with a capped top line gives a Broken Arrow backyard both screening and a finished edge seen from the street.
