At full height with no opening in it, this run reads as a solid boundary from both sides. Four Douglas fir 2×4 backrails carry the pickets rather than the usual three, because a taller fence needs more horizontal structure to keep boards flat and to spread wind load into the posts. Those pickets are 5/8 inch by 3.5 inch cedar, fastened with galvanized ring shank nails to 2 1/2 inch square steel posts set in concrete.
