Round treated pine rail defines open ground without closing it off, and black vinyl coated chain link fixed behind the rails turns it into a real animal barrier. We set 4 inch round treated posts in concrete and ran 4 inch by 8 foot doweled rail between them, then backed it with 9 gauge black mesh. Where the property needed privacy instead, we built a cedar dog ear run on 2 1/2 inch square steel posts with three Douglas fir 2×4 back rails. Openings include a 10 foot wood frame double gate on 8 inch strap hinges with a drop rod assembly, plus a chain link double gate. Bixby acreage often calls for exactly this split.
